In Matthew 9:9-13, Jesus encountered a man who exemplified various characteristics and needs:
- Had a Soul to Be Saved: Jesus recognized the spiritual need of the man and his potential for redemption (Luke 19:10; Mark 8:36-37).
- Had Potentials He Was Not Using: Jesus saw untapped potential in the man, urging him to use his abilities for greater purposes (Matthew 25:15; 2 Timothy 2:21).
- Was Better Than His Surroundings: Despite his environment or circumstances, Jesus saw the inherent value and worth of the man (John 1:45-46; Matthew 8:10).
- Needed Encouragement to Be Better: Jesus provided encouragement and guidance to help the man improve and grow (2 Timothy 4:2; Acts 14:23).
- Let His Light Shine: Jesus encouraged the man to let his light shine before others, reflecting God’s glory through his actions (Mark 2:15; Matthew 5:16; Acts 10:24).
- Was Willing to Pay the Price: Jesus challenged the man to count the cost of discipleship and to be willing to make sacrifices for the sake of following Him (Matthew 16:24; Luke 9:62).
Jesus sees each person individually, recognizing their unique qualities, needs, and potential. He invites everyone to follow Him, offering guidance, encouragement, and salvation to all who respond to His call.
