- Those who have never been married: Individuals who have not previously entered into a marriage covenant.
- Those whose spouses have died: Widows or widowers who are no longer bound by the marriage covenant due to the death of their spouse.
- Those whose spouse has been put away because of fornication/adultery: According to some interpretations, a person whose spouse committed adultery and as a result was divorced (put away) may also have a scriptural right to remarry.
