- Prelude to the Burial:
- Immediate action was needed, John 19:31
- Had to be done before the Jewish holy day.
- They were positive He was dead, John 19:32-37
- No bone in His body had been broken, enabling Him to be the Passover lamb, Exodus 12:46; Psalm 34:20
- His side was pierced, John 19:34
- John was a competent eyewitness, John 19:35
- Scripture was fulfilled, John 19:36-37
- Preparation for Burial – John 19:38-40:
- Joseph of Arimathaea obtained the body from the Romans.
- The body was prepared according to the custom of the Jews.
- Place of Burial – John 19:40-41:
- Physical description:
- In a garden near Golgotha.
- Hewn out of rock.
- The opening was low, John 20:5
- It was a new tomb, John 19:41
- No one had been buried in it before.
- It was a borrowed tomb.
- Joseph of Arimathaea provided his own tomb for the Lord’s burial.
- It is still an empty tomb.
- Not to let Jesus out, but to let the world see the evidence that Jesus is alive and risen.
