- John 3:3-5
“You must be born again.”
Jesus emphasizes the necessity of being born again in order to enter the Kingdom of God. This new birth is not a physical rebirth, but a spiritual one.
Born of Water and Spirit
The new birth involves two essential components:
- Born of Water:
- Romans 6:4-5 – Through baptism, we are buried with Christ and raised to walk in newness of life.
- Hebrews 10:22 – We are washed with pure water, symbolizing spiritual cleansing.
- Titus 3:5 – The washing of regeneration and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
- Galatians 3:27 – We are baptized into Christ and clothed with Him.
- 2 Corinthians 5:17 – In Christ, we become a new creation; the old has passed away.
- Born of Spirit:
- Ephesians 6:17 – The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, leads to spiritual transformation.
- Luke 8:11 – The seed of God’s word, when received, brings new life.
- 1 Peter 1:23 – We are born again by the incorruptible word of God.
- James 1:18 – God, by His will, has brought us forth through the word of truth.
- John 1:12-13 – Those who receive Christ and believe in His name are given the right to become children of God, born not of blood or the will of man, but of God.
Entering the Kingdom of God
- John 3:5 – “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” The new birth is essential to salvation and entry into God’s kingdom.
- Acts 2:47 – “And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.” The new birth also involves being added to the body of Christ, the Church.
Salvation and the Church
- Salvation:
- Matthew 16:18-19 – Christ established His Church, and the keys of the kingdom are given to His followers.
- Mark 16:16 – “He who believes and is baptized will be saved.” Belief and baptism are essential steps in the process of salvation.
The Lord’s Supper and the Kingdom
- Matthew 26:29 – Jesus speaks of drinking from the fruit of the vine in His kingdom, referring to the fellowship that believers will have in the kingdom, which begins now through the church and continues into eternity.
A Physical Birth, but a Spiritual One Too
- While you have been born physically, the crucial question is: Have you been born spiritually? The spiritual birth, through faith, repentance, and baptism, is necessary for entering God’s kingdom and receiving eternal life.
