  • Numbers and Influence: They were not numerous, but wealthy and influential, and to a great extent, they controlled the Sanhedrin.
  • Philosophy: They were rationalistic and worldly-minded.
  • Beliefs:
  • They held only to the written law and rejected the traditions of the Pharisees.
  • Did not believe in:
    • The resurrection of the body.
    • Future rewards or punishments (Heaven or Hell).
    • The existence of angels and spirits.
