How to “Break Down” a Scripture

Bible images
  • 1. Look for what the passage is actually saying
Focus on understanding the passage itself, not on confirming personal biases or assumptions.
  • 2. Do not study with the goal of confirming or proving already drawn conclusions
Approach the scripture with an open mind, allowing it to guide your understanding.
  • 3. In studying the Old Testament, ask yourself:
“What can I learn from this passage that will help me be a better New Testament Christian this side of the cross?”
  • 4. Write down the ideas that come to you from the passage
Document insights, reflections, and personal interpretations to deepen your study.
  • 5. Be open to other passages, Bible stories, etc., that may arise from your study
Allow your current study to lead to new connections, understanding, and perspectives.
  • 6. Take sufficient time to reflect on the passage
Rushing through a passage can prevent you from grasping its deeper meanings. Give time for meditation and reflection.
  • 7. Determine what you can learn from the passage that will:
  • Help you grow spiritually by increasing your knowledge.
  • Enable you to share insights with others to help them on their spiritual journey.
