Introduction to the Cross of Christ

Bible images

The cross of Christ is not just a symbol or a piece of wood. It centers on the Christ of the Cross, Jesus, and His purpose. It is not the cross that held Jesus, but Jesus who willingly bore the cross, which is what truly captivates our attention.

While many crucifixions occurred throughout history, none compare to the one that took place on Friday, April 7, A.D. 30, in Jerusalem. On that day, Jesus, the Son of God, hung on the middle cross, fulfilling God’s ultimate plan for salvation.

Key Aspects of the Cross of Christ

  1. Jesus Did Not “Lose” His Life, He Gave It!
    • Mark 10:45“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
Jesus voluntarily gave His life for the redemption of humanity, and He did so with purpose, not by accident.
  2. Jesus Was Lifted Up on the Cross So Mankind Could Be Lifted Up to the Father
    • John 12:32“And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.”
The crucifixion was not just a physical event; it was the means by which Jesus would bring all people to Himself and reconcile them to the Father.
  3. Jesus Proved His Great Love for All People
    • John 15:13“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.”
The cross is the ultimate demonstration of Jesus’ love for humanity. His willingness to endure the cross reveals the depth of His sacrificial love.
  4. Jesus Tasted Death for Every Man
    • Hebrews 2:9“But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.”
Jesus experienced death on behalf of every person, taking upon Himself the penalty for sin so that all might have eternal life through Him.

The cross of Christ is not simply a historical event but the central act of salvation, through which Jesus proved His love, reconciled humanity to God, and provided a way for all to be saved.
