The Purpose of the Parables of Jesus

1st Purpose: TO CONCEAL

  • To Conceal “the mysteries of the Kingdom of heaven.”
Jesus used parables as a means to conceal the deeper truths about the Kingdom of God from those who were not open to listening or seeking the truth. The parables often contained layers of meaning that were not immediately clear, and this served to separate those who were genuinely seeking to understand from those who were merely curious or hostile.
    • Matthew 13:10-17
In this passage, the disciples ask Jesus why He speaks to the people in parables. Jesus explains that He speaks in parables to conceal truths from those who are not willing to listen or understand, while revealing them to those who are open-hearted and ready to receive His message. The parables served as a tool for discerning the hearts of those who heard them.

2nd Purpose: TO REVEAL

  • To Reveal the Truth to the Truth-Seeker.
While parables were a means of concealing truths from the insincere, they were also a way to reveal the deeper mysteries of God’s Kingdom to those who were truly seeking to understand. Jesus would often explain the meaning of the parables to His disciples, showing them the profound truths hidden within the stories.
    • Matthew 13:36-43
In this passage, Jesus explains the Parable of the Weeds (or the Wheat and the Tares) to His disciples. He reveals that the parable speaks about the end of the age, where the righteous will be separated from the wicked. This explanation illustrates how Jesus used parables not just to hide but also to reveal spiritual truths to those who were open to receiving them.

Thus, the parables served a dual purpose: to conceal the deeper mysteries from those whose hearts were hardened and to reveal them to those who earnestly sought to understand the Kingdom of God.
