In the Scriptures, various aspects of the Lord’s business are highlighted, emphasizing the responsibility and commitment believers must have in carrying out God’s work. Here is a study of the key components of the Lord’s business:
Required Business
- 1 Samuel 2:18: “But Samuel ministered before the Lord, being a child, girded with a linen ephod.”
- God requires His servants to be diligent and faithful in the work He has assigned them, just as Samuel served in the temple from a young age. Our service to God is an essential part of His business, regardless of our age or status.
Ordered Business
- 2 Chronicles 13:10: “But as for us, the Lord is our God, and we have not forsaken Him; and the priests, which minister unto the Lord, are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites wait upon their business.”
- The Lord’s business must be done according to divine order. The priests and Levites had specific duties, and God’s business must be carried out with proper structure, obedience, and reverence.
Individual Business
- Nehemiah 13:30: “Thus cleansed I them from all strangers, and appointed the wards of the priests and the Levites, every one in his business.”
- Every believer has an individual responsibility in the Lord’s business. Just as Nehemiah ensured that each person was assigned their rightful role, we too must focus on our personal calling and assignment in God’s work.
Fulfilled Business
- Daniel 8:27: “And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king’s business: and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.”
- Luke 2:41-49: Jesus speaks in the temple, saying, “I must be about my Father’s business.”
- The fulfillment of God’s business involves commitment even in times of challenge. Jesus was clear that His purpose was to be about His Father’s business, and Daniel resumed his work even after being physically weakened. We must persist in fulfilling the work God has called us to.
Diligent Business
- Romans 12:11: “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.”
- God calls for diligent service. We must engage in His business with enthusiasm and zeal, avoiding laziness or half-heartedness.
Studied Business
- 1 Thessalonians 4:11: “And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you.”
- Believers are encouraged to study and understand their responsibilities and to work with excellence. Engaging in God’s business requires preparation, wisdom, and intentionality.
Assisted Business
- Romans 16:2: “That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.”
- The Lord’s business also involves supporting and assisting others in their ministry. Helping and encouraging fellow believers is an important aspect of God’s work.
Are You About Your Father’s Business?
As followers of Christ, we are called to be about our Father’s business. This involves:
- Faithfulness in the required and ordered work God gives us.
- Diligence in serving with enthusiasm and commitment.
- Studying and understanding our roles in God’s work, ensuring we handle it wisely.
- Assisting others and working together to further the Kingdom of God.
Let us continually ask ourselves: Are we diligently engaged in the Lord’s business, doing our part as He has assigned? May we serve with joy and purpose in all that we do for His glory.
