In Matthew 16:21, Jesus foretells His coming suffering, death, and resurrection, specifically stating that He will suffer at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and scribes. This is significant because it references the key components of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling body during the time of Jesus.
The Sanhedrin was composed of three main chambers or orders that would pass judgment, and Matthew refers to these groups in the context of the suffering Jesus would endure.
1. The Chamber of Priests
This was the group of high priests and other priests who were responsible for the temple and its rituals. They held significant influence over the spiritual life of the Jewish people. Their involvement in the judgment of Jesus was particularly concerning because of their religious authority, which they used to manipulate and maintain control over the people. The high priests, like Caiaphas, were instrumental in the plot to have Jesus arrested and tried.
2. The Chamber of Scribes
The scribes were the experts in the Jewish law, responsible for copying and interpreting the scriptures. They played a critical role in teaching and applying the Mosaic Law. In Jesus’ trial, the scribes helped accuse Him of blasphemy, as they believed His claims to be the Son of God were a violation of Jewish law. Their legal expertise was used to accuse Jesus in a manner that sought to prove He was deserving of death.
3. The Chamber of Elders
The elders were respected leaders in the Jewish community, often men of age, wisdom, and social standing. They acted as community leaders and were involved in important decisions, including the trials of individuals. In the Sanhedrin, they held a position of authority that allowed them to be part of the judicial process. The elders were also involved in the condemnation of Jesus, working with the chief priests and scribes to accuse Him and bring Him to trial.
Hebrew Criminal Law
Under Hebrew criminal law, the Sanhedrin held the authority to pass judgments, including the death sentence, although their decisions had to be ratified by Roman authorities for execution. The involvement of these three chambers—elders, priests, and scribes—demonstrates the cooperation between different aspects of Jewish leadership in condemning Jesus.
Thus, Matthew 16:21 foreshadows the combined efforts of the Sanhedrin (the elders, priests, and scribes) to bring about Jesus’ suffering and death, as they misunderstood His true purpose and mission. Despite their authority, Jesus’ death was part of God’s plan for redemption, and His resurrection would ultimately overcome the judgment passed upon Him.
