Passing the Tests of Life

Joseph’s life in the book of Genesis serves as a powerful example of perseverance, faith, and integrity through the trials and tests of life. As we reflect on the challenges Joseph faced, we can identify several key tests that are common to our own lives. Each test offers us an opportunity to grow and strengthen our relationship with God. Are we passing these tests?

1. The Test of Purity (Genesis 39:8)

Joseph’s commitment to purity is one of his most admirable qualities. He was faced with the temptation of Potiphar’s wife, but he refused to sin against God. Joseph set clear boundaries and made provisions to avoid temptation.

  • Application: Are we setting boundaries in our lives to protect our purity? Do we run from temptation or face it with integrity?

2. The Test of Pride (Genesis 41:16)

Pride can easily creep into our lives, especially when we begin to see success. Joseph’s response to Pharaoh’s question, “Can you interpret dreams?” shows his humble spirit. He acknowledged that it was not his ability, but God’s wisdom, that allowed him to interpret dreams.

  • Application: Are we taking credit for what only God can do? Do we maintain a humble spirit even when we achieve success?

3. The Test of Priorities (Genesis 41:38)

Joseph had a clear sense of purpose. Even Pharaoh recognized that Joseph had the anointing of God upon him. He was faithful in every role—son, shepherd, slave, servant, manager, and administrator—always seeking to honor God first.

  • Application: Are we prioritizing the Kingdom of God in our lives? Do we seek first His will in everything we do?

4. The Test of Pardon (Genesis 45)

One of the most difficult tests Joseph faced was the test of forgiveness. His brothers had sold him into slavery, causing years of suffering, yet when he had the chance to retaliate, he chose forgiveness. He recognized that God had used his trials to accomplish His greater purpose.

  • Application: Are we holding grudges or offering forgiveness? Can we see God’s greater purpose in our pain and choose to forgive those who have wronged us?

5. The Test of Perseverance (Genesis 50)

Joseph’s life was full of setbacks, but he remained faithful to God. He lived out his days in Egypt, having seen God’s promises fulfilled in his life. Even in his final years, Joseph demonstrated perseverance, trusting in God’s plan until the end.

  • Application: Are we persevering through trials? Do we trust God’s plan even when we don’t see the outcome right away?

Conclusion:

Joseph’s life exemplifies how we can pass the tests of life through faith, integrity, humility, and perseverance. Each test is an opportunity to grow stronger in our relationship with God and to live out His purposes in our lives. Like Joseph, we are called to be faithful in every area of our lives, even when faced with challenges. Are we passing the tests of life, or are we allowing pride, unforgiveness, and impatience to hinder our walk with God? Let us be encouraged to remain faithful, knowing that God uses every test to refine us and fulfill His purposes.
