The Period of the Prophets Covers Approximately 400 Years

The prophetic period in the Bible spans a significant amount of time, during which various prophets delivered messages from God to the people of Israel and surrounding nations. This period covers the time from approximately 850 BC to the 4th century BC.

Key Prophets and Their Messages

1. Jonah
   • Message: God wants His enemies saved
     Jonah was sent to the city of Nineveh to deliver God’s message of repentance. His reluctance to go reflects the challenge of accepting God’s desire for the salvation of even Israel’s enemies. The message emphasizes God’s mercy and willingness to forgive those who repent.
     • Key Verse: Jonah 3:10 – “Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.”
2. Micah
   • Message: The coming King and His reign
     Micah prophesied the coming of a ruler from Bethlehem who would lead God’s people in justice and peace. He emphasized that true worship involves justice, mercy, and humility before God.
     • Key Verse: Micah 5:2 – “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.”
3. Nahum
   • Message: Judgment on the city of Nineveh
     Nahum prophesied the destruction of Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian Empire, as a consequence of its cruelty and wickedness. This message was a fulfillment of Jonah’s earlier prophecy, demonstrating God’s justice in bringing judgment upon unrepentant nations.
     • Key Verse: Nahum 1:7 – “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.”
4. Habakkuk
   • Message: God’s people will be victorious
     Habakkuk questioned why God allowed injustice to prevail but was assured that the righteous would live by faith. God’s justice would prevail, and His people would ultimately be victorious despite the seeming triumph of evil.
     • Key Verse: Habakkuk 2:4 – “Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; but the just shall live by his faith.”
5. Zephaniah
   • Message: A new message for God’s people
     Zephaniah prophesied about the coming day of the Lord, a time of judgment, but also hope for those who are faithful. He called for repentance and purification to prepare for the coming of God’s kingdom.
     • Key Verse: Zephaniah 3:17 – “The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”
6. Haggai
   • Message: The second temple and the greater temple of the future
     Haggai encouraged the people to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile. His prophecies pointed to a greater fulfillment in the future, where God would establish a perfect kingdom.
     • Key Verse: Haggai 2:9 – “The glory of this latter temple shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, says the Lord of hosts.”
7. Zechariah
   • Message: The coming King and His Kingdom
     Zechariah’s prophecies focused on the restoration of Israel and the coming of the Messiah, who would bring peace and establish God’s kingdom.
     • Key Verse: Zechariah 9:9 – “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.”
8. Malachi
   • Message: The closing message while people await the coming Messiah
     Malachi provided the final message of the Old Testament, emphasizing the need for righteousness and faithfulness in the waiting for the coming of the Messiah. He also foretold the coming of Elijah before the great and dreadful day of the Lord.
     • Key Verse: Malachi 4:5-6 – “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”

• 2 Samuel 24:11: “Now when David arose in the morning, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying…”
  This phrase highlights how God communicated directly with the prophets, delivering His messages to guide, correct, and encourage His people.
