The Biblical Husband & Father

Genesis 3:16

  • “To the woman He said, ‘I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.’”
This verse highlights the role of a husband as one who has been divinely appointed to lead within the family.

Ephesians 5:23

  • “For the husband is the head of the wife, as also Christ is the head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.”
The husband is called to be a leader in the home, leading with love and responsibility, just as Christ leads the church.

A Father Is a Father Who Leads

  • The father must lead by example, showing what it means to walk in godliness and serve the Lord, guiding his family with wisdom and patience.

A Father Is a Leader Who Is Led

  • True leadership comes when a father submits to God’s guidance, allowing the Lord to direct his decisions and actions, making him a humble servant-leader in the home.

A Father Is a Leader by Divine Appointment

  • God has appointed fathers to lead their families. This leadership is a responsibility and a calling, not just a position of authority.

A Breakdown in Leadership Can Lead to a Breakdown in “Follow-ship”

  • When a father neglects his leadership role, it can cause confusion and disarray in the family structure. Leadership is key to guiding children and wife in the right path.

A Father Loves His Family

  • Ephesians 5:25: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her.”
A father’s love for his family should reflect Christ’s sacrificial love for the church.

A Father Is Unselfish Toward His Family

  • 1 Corinthians 13:5: “Love does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil.”
A father shows unselfishness by prioritizing the needs of his family, putting them above his own desires and interests.

A Father Provides for His Family

  • 1 Timothy 5:8: “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”
A father’s role includes ensuring the material, emotional, and spiritual well-being of his family.

A Father Is the Protector of His Family

  • The father is called to protect his family in all ways—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Many biblical figures exemplify this role, such as Abraham protecting his family and David defending his people.

A Father Teaches His Children

  • Ephesians 6:4: “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.”
Fathers have the responsibility to teach their children the ways of the Lord, nurturing them in righteousness.

A Father Disciplines His Children

  • Proverbs 13:24: “He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly.”
Discipline is a key part of a father’s role, ensuring that his children grow in wisdom and maturity.
  • Hebrews 12:6: “For whom the Lord loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.”
Just as God disciplines those He loves, so should fathers guide their children through correction and loving discipline.

A Father Is the Spiritual Leader of the Home

  • Job 1:5: “So it was, when the days of feasting had run their course, that Job would send and sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, ‘It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.’”
Job, as the spiritual leader, took it upon himself to intercede for his children, ensuring they remained spiritually connected to God. A father must be the spiritual guide in the home.

In all these roles, the biblical husband and father is called to be a leader, protector, provider, and teacher, while modeling Christ-like love, humility, and devotion to his family.
