The Holy Spirit possesses qualities that are characteristic of a person, not merely an abstract force or energy. Scripture reveals several aspects of the Holy Spirit’s personality and attributes, demonstrating His role in the lives of believers.
1. He Possesses a Mind
- Romans 8:27: “And he who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”
The Holy Spirit has a mind, understanding the thoughts and intentions of believers, interceding for them according to God’s will.
2. He Knows and Thinks
- 1 Corinthians 2:10-11: “But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so, no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.”
The Holy Spirit has knowledge and understanding, including the deep things of God, and He communicates this knowledge to believers.
3. He Has the Power to Act
- Genesis 1:2: “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”
The Holy Spirit actively participates in creation and continues to work in the world, demonstrating His ability to act and influence events.
4. He Possesses Individuality
- John 16:7-11: “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.”
The Holy Spirit is distinct from the Father and the Son, with personal characteristics and a distinct role in the work of God.
5. He Possesses Character
- John 16:13-15: “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.”
The Holy Spirit has character traits, such as truth, guidance, and the ability to glorify Christ. His work is always in line with the will of God and the truth of the Gospel.
6. He Has the Power to Exercise His Will
- Acts 16:6: “Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia.”
The Holy Spirit exercises His will, directing and guiding the actions of the apostles and believers according to God’s plan.
7. He Has the Capacity to Love
- Romans 5:3-5: “And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”
The Holy Spirit has the capacity to love and imparts the love of God into the hearts of believers, demonstrating His personal and relational nature.
8. He Has the Power to Order and Forbid
- Acts 16:6: “Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia.”
The Holy Spirit can give commands, restrict actions, and guide believers’ decisions, showing His authority and power in directing the church.
He is a person with a mind, will, character, love, and the ability to act and guide. These qualities make Him a distinct and personal part of the Godhead, working in the lives of believers to accomplish God’s purposes.
