Why Did Jesus Speak in Parables?
- It Was Prophesied That He Would.
- In Isaiah 6:9-10, the prophet foretold that God’s message would be hidden in parables, and that people would hear but not understand, see but not perceive. Jesus’ use of parables was a fulfillment of this prophecy. In Matthew 13:14-16, Jesus explains that the use of parables was a means of revealing truths to those with receptive hearts, while hiding them from those who were not open to His message. This approach would fulfill the prophecy, allowing Jesus to reveal divine truths in a way that both concealed and revealed, depending on the heart of the listener.
- Because His Time Had Not Come to Speak Plainly.
- John 10:1-6 describes how Jesus spoke to the people using figures of speech, or parables, which only His disciples truly understood. Jesus spoke in parables as a way to teach spiritual truths, but He did not yet fully reveal Himself to the masses. Matthew 13:10-12 highlights that when His disciples asked why He spoke in parables, He explained that He used them to reveal truths to those who were open to learning, while concealing them from those who were unwilling to listen. Parables served as both a revelation and a form of judgment for those who rejected His message.
- Before His Death, Jesus Began to Speak Plainly.
- John 16:25 marks a significant shift when Jesus began to speak more openly and plainly to His disciples. He explained that those who were willing to listen with open hearts would receive more understanding. The parables had served to prepare the disciples for the clearer teachings that would come in the days leading up to His death and resurrection. In John 16:30, the disciples themselves recognize that Jesus is now speaking plainly without the use of figurative language, signaling a new phase in His teachings as He prepared to reveal the fullness of God’s plan for salvation.
Summary:
Jesus used parables as a strategic method of teaching to fulfill prophecy, to protect the deeper truths for those who were ready, and to lay the groundwork for more direct teaching as His mission neared its fulfillment. Parables offered both spiritual nourishment and concealed mysteries that would only be fully understood by those with ears to hear and hearts willing to receive the truth.
