According to 2 Corinthians 5:17-21, becoming a Christian signifies a profound transformation. This transformation is not just external but a complete renewal of heart, mind, and purpose, reflecting a life that is radically different from the past.

1. A Christian Has a Change of Heart

  • Paul Saw Jesus Differently:
    • Acts 9:1-18 – Saul’s encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus led to a radical transformation. Saul’s heart was changed, and he was no longer a persecutor of Christians but became Paul, a devout follower of Christ.

2. A Christian Has a New Lifestyle

  • Romans 6:14-18, 21-22 – As Christians, believers no longer live under the power of sin but under the grace of God. Their actions, choices, and lifestyle reflect their new identity in Christ, living a life of righteousness and holiness.
  • Romans 6:18 – “Having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.” A Christian’s lifestyle is marked by a shift from sin to righteousness, living to honor God.

3. A Christian Has a New Allegiance – A New Loyalty

  • Romans 10:9-10 – A Christian’s allegiance is now to Christ. “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
  • Matthew 22:42 – Jesus is not only the Savior but also the Lord, and a Christian’s loyalty is centered in Him above all other authorities or desires.

4. A Christian Has a Change in Relationship

  • Galatians 3:27 – “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” Through baptism, Christians are united with Christ, becoming part of His body, the Church, and having a restored relationship with God.

5. A Christian Has a New Reason for Living – A New Purpose of Life

  • Acts 26:16-17 – Paul’s purpose was to be a witness for Christ, to open the eyes of the Gentiles and lead them to the light of the gospel.
  • Philippians 1:21 – “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” A Christian’s life is centered around Christ, and their purpose is to glorify Him in all things.

Christians Change from the Inside Outwardly

The change a Christian experiences begins in the heart and works its way outward. This transformation is not merely external behavior modification, but a complete renewal of the inner self, which leads to new attitudes, desires, and actions that reflect the love and truth of Christ.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new has come!”

This inner transformation is evidenced by a new heart, a new lifestyle, new relationships, and a new purpose, all centered on Christ. Christians are not just reformed; they are completely renewed in Christ.
