The following parables highlight the cost of discipleship and the price one must pay to gain the kingdom of God. Each of these teachings emphasizes the importance of sacrifice, commitment, and understanding the value of what is being sought.

1. Seedtime & Harvest
   Mark 4:26-29
   Jesus compares the kingdom of God to a seed planted in the ground that grows and produces a harvest. While the growth may be gradual and sometimes unseen, the faithful sowing of God’s Word will eventually lead to a harvest. This parable emphasizes the importance of patience and understanding that God’s work takes time and effort, which is often unseen but yields great rewards.
2. The Mustard Seed
   Matthew 13:31-32
   This parable speaks of a tiny mustard seed, which, though small, grows into a large tree. It symbolizes the kingdom of God, starting from humble beginnings but growing to have great influence and impact. The cost of discipleship may seem small at first, but the eternal rewards are far-reaching and vast.
3. The Pearl of Great Price
   Matthew 13:45-46
   In this parable, a merchant finds a pearl of great value and sells everything he has to purchase it. This illustrates the immense value of the kingdom of heaven. The cost of following Christ involves sacrifice, but the reward is far greater than anything we might give up.
4. Building a Tower
   Luke 14:28-30
   Jesus compares following Him to the task of building a tower. Before beginning such a project, a person must first count the cost to ensure they can complete it. This teaches that being a disciple of Jesus requires careful consideration and commitment, as following Him involves facing challenges, sacrifices, and hardships.
5. Hidden Treasure
   Matthew 13:44
   A man discovers a treasure hidden in a field and, in his joy, sells everything he has to buy the field and obtain the treasure. The kingdom of heaven is like this treasure: it is so valuable that everything else seems insignificant in comparison. The cost of discipleship involves total surrender, but the reward is priceless.
6. King Going to War
   Luke 14:31-32
   A king considering going to war with another king must first evaluate whether he has enough resources to win. If not, he seeks terms of peace. This parable emphasizes that being a disciple of Christ requires evaluating the cost, just as a king must count his army’s strength before going to battle. Discipleship demands commitment and dedication, and we must be prepared to pay the price to follow Christ.

These parables remind us that while the kingdom of God is a priceless treasure, it requires sacrifice and careful consideration. Whether it’s selling everything for the pearl of great price or counting the cost before building a tower, following Jesus involves paying a price, but the rewards are beyond what we can imagine.
