2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”
What Does It Mean to Be in Christ?
To be “in Christ” is to be spiritually united with Him, through faith, and to experience a transformation in every area of life. This union with Christ brings about a radical change—old ways are replaced with new ones. Here’s what it means to be “in Christ”:
1. A New Standard
Being “in Christ” means living according to His example and teachings. We are called to a higher standard of holiness, love, and righteousness that reflects Christ’s life.
2. A New Reward
Our hope is no longer in earthly treasures or accomplishments, but in eternal rewards with Christ. Our new reward is the eternal life and fellowship with God that comes through Jesus.
3. A New Outlook
Being in Christ changes our perspective on life. We begin to see the world through the eyes of faith, looking beyond temporary circumstances to the eternal promises of God.
4. A New Peace
Christ offers a peace that transcends understanding, one that guards our hearts and minds in every circumstance. This peace is not dependent on external conditions but is a deep, internal assurance that God is in control.
5. A New Incentive
When we are in Christ, our motivations shift. We no longer live for self-glory or personal gain, but for God’s glory and the advancement of His Kingdom. Our desire to serve Him becomes our driving force.
6. New Duties
In Christ, we take on new responsibilities, including sharing the gospel, serving others, and living in a way that honors God. We are called to fulfill the duties of our faith, which include love, mercy, and justice.
7. A New Purpose
Our purpose changes when we are in Christ. Instead of living for our own desires or ambitions, we live to honor God, further His Kingdom, and serve others with the gifts and opportunities He has given us.
8. New Obligations
Being “in Christ” brings new obligations to follow His commands, to love one another, and to live in the light of His Word. These obligations are not burdensome, but joyful expressions of our love for Christ.
9. A New Relationship with God
To be in Christ is to be reconciled to God. We are adopted as His children, forgiven of sin, and brought into a personal, intimate relationship with the Creator. This relationship is marked by grace, love, and communion.
10. New Behavior
Being in Christ leads to a change in behavior. The Holy Spirit empowers us to live in a way that reflects Christ’s character—through humility, kindness, patience, and integrity. Our actions are now aligned with God’s will.
Are You in Christ?
Being “in Christ” is not just a one-time decision but an ongoing, transformative relationship. If you are in Christ, you are a new creation, and the old has passed away. The question is: Are you living in the reality of your new identity in Christ?
