Thinking Too Highly of Ourselves
The Bible warns against pride and an inflated sense of self, which leads to spiritual danger and separation from God. The following insights reveal the dangers of self-exaltation and its consequences.
1. Minimizing the Need for God
Pride blinds us to our dependence on God and our need for His grace.
- Romans 12:3: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but think with sober judgment.
- Matthew 5:3: “Blessed are the poor in spirit,” for humility acknowledges our need for God.
- Mark 12:34: Understanding God’s Word requires a heart submitted to Him.
2. Being Susceptible to Offenses
Pride fosters a self-centered mindset, making us easily offended and unwilling to serve others.
- Philippians 2:3-5: Value others above yourself, following Christ’s humility.
- Romans 12:16: Do not be proud but be willing to associate with the lowly.
- 2 Corinthians 13:5: Examine yourself to avoid pride’s deceitful grip.
3. Destruction and Fall
Pride leads to spiritual downfall and rejection by God.
- Proverbs 16:18: Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
- Daniel 5:20-21, 27: King Belshazzar’s pride led to his downfall and judgment.
4. Rejecting the Simplicity of the Gospel
Pride causes us to reject the Gospel’s straightforward truth, seeking worldly wisdom instead.
- 1 Corinthians 1:18-21: The message of the cross seems foolish to the proud but is the power of God.
- 1 Corinthians 1:25-29: God uses the humble to shame the proud and exalt His wisdom.
Pride Leads One To:
1. Be Indifferent to Spiritual Values
Materialism and self-reliance result in indifference to eternal matters.
- Matthew 19:16-22: The rich young ruler valued possessions over spiritual treasure.
- 1 Timothy 6:17-19: Do not place hope in wealth, but in God.
2. Commit Many Sins
Pride opens the door to rebellion against God and mistreatment of others.
- Acts 5:3-10: Ananias and Sapphira lied out of pride and greed, facing God’s judgment.
- Esther 3:1-6: Haman’s pride led to hatred and destruction.
3. Ultimate Rejection Before God
God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.
- Proverbs 6:16-17: God hates pride and arrogance.
- James 4:6: God resists the proud but exalts the humble.
Reflection
- What do you think of yourself? Pride distances you from God and others.
- What do you think of Christ? Humility acknowledges His lordship and aligns you with God’s will.
Let us seek humility, recognizing our need for God, valuing spiritual truths, and following Christ’s example.
