Eleven Steps for Studying a Scripture

From What Place Was the Text Written?

  • Context and surroundings contribute to the text’s meaning.
  • Example: Paul’s epistles gain significance when understanding he was in prison (e.g., 2 Timothy).
  • Many Old Testament prophecies were made during the Babylonian exile, relating to Israel’s return to Palestine.
  • Misunderstanding historical context can lead to errors in interpretation.

Look for What the Passage Is Actually Saying Rather Than What You Would Like for It to Say

  • Avoid studying scripture to confirm preconceived ideas; be open to God’s truths.
  • Ask: “What can I learn from this passage to become a better New Testament Christian?”
  • Write down ideas and insights from the passage.
  • Be open to exploring other passages and stories connected to your thoughts.
  • Take sufficient time to reflect—don’t rush your study.

Determine What You Can Learn from This Passage That Will:

  • Help you grow spiritually by increasing your knowledge (Romans 10:17).
  • Equip you to share with and help others (2 Timothy 2:15).

These steps foster spiritual growth, deeper understanding, and effective sharing of God’s Word.
