- Is it from the Old or New Testament?
- Identify its genre: Law, History, Prophecy, Biography, etc.
- Become Familiar with the Overall Context
- Consider the broader context of the passage, not just the individual verse.
- Who Is the Author of the Text?
- Identify who wrote the passage.
- Who is speaking or being quoted?
- Was the speaker inspired or uninspired?
- To Whom Is the Text Addressed?
- Understand the audience’s situation and context.
- What is their relationship with God?
- Of Whom Does the Text Speak?
- Identify the key individuals discussed.
- Understand their background to better interpret the text.
- What Is the Nature of the Writing?
- Recognize the type of writing (Law, Prophecy, Letters, Visions, etc.).
- When Was the Text Written?
- Know when the text was written to understand its application and law context.
