How to “Break Down” a Scripture

A. Unwelcomed Tendencies Present Today:

  • Studying About the Bible Without Studying What’s in the Bible
  • Focus on concepts or opinions instead of direct study of Scripture.
  • Neglecting the Bible in Classes
  • Over-reliance on lesson helps or quarterlies, neglecting the Bible itself.
  • Bible study is the main purpose of Bible schools (Sunday School, Bible Classes, etc.).
  • Not Encouraging Every Student to Bring a Bible to Class
  • Students should bring their Bibles to class; if not, the elders should provide one.
  • Emphasizing Method Over Content
  • Focus on teaching methods rather than the correct content of Scripture.
  • Treating Sunday School as a “Necessary Stepchild”
  • Bible education should be prioritized and not seen as secondary.

B. “Breaking Down” a Scripture – What It Means:

  • “Breaking down” Scripture refers to dividing larger, complex ideas into smaller, manageable portions for better understanding.

1. 2 Timothy 2:15“Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

  • KJV: “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
  • ASV: “Give diligence to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, handling aright the word of truth.”
  • RSV: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.”

2. Key Points from 2 Timothy 2:15:

  • Rightly Dividing – Interpreting Scripture correctly.
  • Handling Rightly – Applying God’s Word accurately, without misinterpretation or distortion.
