Matthew 22:37-40
Jesus said to him,
“You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
The First Commandment
“You shall love the LORD your God”
With all your heart
With all your soul
With all your mind
This commandment emphasizes the importance of loving God fully and wholeheartedly. It encompasses every aspect of the person—emotions, will, intellect, and spirit.
The Second Commandment
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
This commandment emphasizes the need for love and respect for others, treating them as we would want to be treated.
Summary of the Ten Commandments
The first and great commandment sums up the first four of the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3-8), which focus on loving and honoring God.
The second commandment sums up the remaining six commandments (Exodus 20:12-17), which address loving and respecting others.
These two commandments are the foundation of all the teachings in the Law and the Prophets, highlighting love as the central principle of God’s commands.
