Deacons

1 Timothy 3:8-13

The word “DEACON” is derived from the Greek word “DIAKONOS,” which means servant, attendant, or minister. A deacon serves as a helper or minister in the church, contrasting with an elder, who is an overseer.

While the New Testament doesn’t specify the exact duties of deacons, the office is considered an honorable position in the church. In Acts 6:1-7, we see an example of the early church identifying a need for deacons to assist with practical matters, allowing the apostles to focus on prayer and the ministry of the Word.

The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Philippians, mentions deacons as part of the church leadership:
“Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons.”
— Philippians 1:1
