- At the time of Christ’s birth, the Roman Empire measured time from the founding of Rome.
- After Christianity spread, Emperor Justinian requested a new calendar based on Christ’s birth. In A.D. 526, Dionysius Exiguus created this “Christian Calendar” to replace the Roman system.
- Later, historians found that Dionysius miscalculated. He placed Christ’s birth in 753 A.U.C. (from Rome’s founding), though it likely occurred around 749 A.U.C., resulting in our current estimate of 4 B.C. for Christ’s birth.
