Church Discipline

Definition of Discipline:
“Training or experience that corrects, molds, strengthens, or perfects.”

Discipline is Two-Fold:

  • Instructive: Preventive in nature.
  • Corrective: Chastising or penalizing in nature.

Discipline is a Biblical Subject:

  • 1 Corinthians 5:1-13
  • Leviticus 7:27; 17:8-9
  • 2 Corinthians 2:6-11; 13:1-2
  • Deuteronomy 13:12-18
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:14
  • Matthew 18:15-18
  • 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15
  • Romans 16:17-18
  • 1 Timothy 1:19-20; 5:19-20; 6:3-5
  • 1 Corinthians 4:19-21
  • Titus 1:13; 2:15; 3:10-11

Four Purposes of Church Discipline:

  • Reformation of the offender: Bringing the offender back to righteous living.
  • Preservation of the moral purity of the Church: Maintaining the Church’s holiness.
  • Defense of the good name and reputation of the Church: Protecting the Church’s integrity.
  • Carrying out the expressed will of God: Following God’s command for discipline and correction.
