William McPherson was tragically injured when a charge of dynamite exploded in front of his face, leaving him blind, without hands, and with numbness in parts of his face. Despite these severe limitations, he realized how essential the Bible was to him for strength and comfort.
Unable to read Braille due to his artificial hands, he tried using his lips to feel the raised dots, but they were too numb. Finally, he discovered he could use his tongue to decipher the Moon Type System of dashes. Although the metal dots left his tongue and lips sore and bleeding, McPherson prayed for the strength to continue, learning the Bible one letter at a time.
Over the next 65 years, he miraculously read the entire Bible four times using only his tongue. His profound love for the Bible and his determination to overcome great adversity serves as a powerful example. His story leaves us without excuse for neglecting the study and appreciation of Scripture.
