Longsuffering: A Neglected Principle

The Value of Longsuffering

Prevents Disagreements

  • Proverbs 15:1: A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
  • Hebrews 10:24: Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.

Destroys Retaliation

  • 1 John 3:15: Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life residing in him.
  • Romans 12:17-19: Do not repay anyone evil for evil… Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath.

Preserves Harmony

  • Romans 14:19: Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.
  • Ephesians 4:1-3: Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

Eliminates “Mote” Hunting

  • Matthew 7:1-5: Do not judge, or you too will be judged… Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?
  • John 7:24: Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.

Fortifies Against Trials

  • James 5:10-11: As an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord… The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
  • 1 Timothy 1:16: But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience.

Helps Bear Burdens

  • Galatians 6:1-2: Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
  • Philippians 2:3-5: Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.
  • Romans 15:1-2: We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves.

Is God’s Will

  • 2 Peter 3:9: The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Do You Suffer Long with Others?

Longsuffering is not just about enduring difficult situations; it’s about exercising patience, fostering peace, and supporting one another in love. Reflect on how you can embody this principle in your relationships and community.
